Andy Warhol began creating commission portrait paintings after Fred Hughes, Warhol's deceased business manager, decided anyone should be able have Andy Warhol create their portrait for $25,000, the original commission fee, for the first painting, and $5,000 for multiple paintings.
Andy Warhol then developed a systematic process for commission portrait paintings. Before creating the 40 x 40 inch commission portrait on canvas, Warhol initially shot many polaroids so he could then select desired shots which would be screenprinted into the commission portraits.
Today, these 40 x 40 inch portrait have actually turned into great investments; even portraits of the not so famous are easily sold for prices in the hundreds of thousands, and command more if the portrait is a beautiful woman, with sweeping blond hair along with bright red lips!
Time has been good to these Andy Warhol commission portraits; international collectors hang several Warhol Commission paintings next to other Pop Art.
Like most great artists, Andy Warhol just gets better and better!
