Polaroid Photography Collection Awaits Court Approval For Sotheby's Dispersal

According to the Wall Street Journal, Polaroid wants Sotheby's to market its Photography Collection, valued at $7-$11 million. Polaroid asked for Court approval to permit Sotheby's to offer its extensive Photograph Collection at Public Auction and Private Sale.

Polaroid sold the majority of its assets to a joint venture of Hilco Consumer Capital Corporation, and Gordon Brothers Brands LLC for $87.6 million in April 09, but excluded the Photography Collection from the transaction.

The Collection includes one of a kind Polaroids by Andy Warhol, Ansel Adams, William Wegman, Lucas Samaras, David Hockney, Imogen Cuningham, Robert Rauschenberg and hundreds more.

Highlights, along with the number of images in the Collection:
  • 627 Ansel Adams
  • 78 William Wegman
  • 59 David Levinthal
  • 22 Lucas Samaras
  • 19 Timothy Greenfield-Sanders
  • 16 Duane Michals
  • 14 Imogen Cunningham
  • 13 Andy Warhol Large Scale Self-Portraits
  • 10 Robert Rauschenberg
  • 6 Andres Serrano
  • 3 Margaret Bourke-White

Begun by Edwin H. Land, the founder of Polaroid, in conjunction with Ansel Adams, the vast Polaroid Collection requires extensive marketing, given the well known limited conservation life span of a Polaroid Photos.

According to court documents, much of the Collection is in a storage facility in Somerville, Mass, along with a significant loan to the Musee de L'Elysee, France.

Polaroid has requested a decision from the Court before the images disappear!
